Richard Wilks

Richard is an experienced legal professional serving as General Counsel and Head of Business Affairs at Underknown, where he manages contracts, legal negotiations, and copyright strategy. He plays a key role in growing Underknown Studios and driving the company’s mergers, acquisitions, and partnership opportunities. Additionally, Richard runs his own legal practice, Inter Alia Law, advising SaaS providers, content distributors, and tech start-ups in industries such as media and technology.

Previously, Richard was in-house counsel at CanWest Global and Shaw Communications, leading teams in content licensing and distribution. His extensive experience spans a variety of agreements, including film and TV deals, software licensing, and copyright
matters. He has worked with companies undergoing rapid growth, offering both legal and business insight to navigate complex issues. Richard is also a mentor at Ryerson’s DMZ and the ideaBOOST accelerator, supporting digital entertainment and tech start-ups.

Outside of work, he enjoys playing hockey, spending time with his wife and twin boys, and exploring music. He holds an M.B.A. from
the University of Arizona/Thunderbird and a law degree from the University of Western Ontario.
