Learn How The Technion Is Pioneering Water Innovation
Even before Israel was established, the Technion’s faculty, students, and alumni pioneered water resource management in desert regions. They developed the national water carrier, enhanced water treatment and desalination technologies, and introduced drip irrigation, transforming Israel from water-scarce to water-rich.
Today, Israel leads in water reclamation, recycling over 90% of wastewater for agriculture and industry. Its five desalination plants now provide the majority of drinking water, supported by complex systems that meet diverse needs.
The Technion remains committed to enhancing water sustainability and quality. Established in 1993, the Stephen and Nancy Grand Water Research Institute (GWRI) tackles these challenges through interdisciplinary research and a focus on both local needs and international collaboration.
